Video: Stamkos spars with Marchand, sparks Lightning

Stamkos fight

Steven Stamkos did something he almost never does on Sunday: He dropped the gloves. The Lightning captain didn’t appreciate Marchand’s hit on Valtteri Filppula and stood up for his teammate.

While it was just the second fight of Stamkos’ career, he managed to take down Marchand swiftly:

The game was tied at 1-1 at that point, but Lightning forward J.T. Brown found the back of the net less than a minute after the sparring match. A mere 15 seconds later, Anton Stralman made it 3-1 in favor of Tampa Bay:

The Tampa Bay Lightning could certainly use these two points as they chase Montreal in the battle for both the Atlantic Division title and Presidents’ Trophy. However, it seems fair to say that this contest should mean even more to Boston. The Bruins hold the second Wild Card spot, but they only have a one point edge over Ottawa despite having played in one more game. If the Bruins don’t secure a point tonight then the Senators will have a golden opportunity to surpass them.
