Leafs running out of bad things to say about themselves

All the Toronto Maple Leafs can seem to do at this stage is to find new ways of describing their lackluster play.

On March 7, Leafs head coach Peter Horachek said the team put forth “no effort” in their 6-1 loss to the St. Louis Blues. When a reporter asked if that was about the worst thing he could say about the team, Horachek agreed that it was.

Following Monday’s 4-1 loss to Edmonton, Phil Kessel lamented that this was “an all-time low in hockey.”

So what was left to say after allowing 21 shots in a single period to the San Jose Sharks en route to a 4-1 loss tonight?

“It was like a pro team playing a non-pro team,” Horachek said of the contest, per TSN’s Jonas Siegel.

“We were probably a junior team playing against an NHL team tonight,” goaltender Jonathan Bernier suggested.

What could the Maple Leafs possibly add to that if the Ottawa Senators, who have far more left to play for, blow them out of the water on Saturday?
