That Sven Baertschi is no longer a member of the Calgary Flames organization -- he was traded to Vancouver today -- should come as no surprise to those who remember what president of hockey ops Brian Burke said about the player in 2013.

“This is a guy, right now, who’s focusing on one area,” Burke said. “There’s three zones on the ice … and I don’t see that he’s learned to play and compete in two of them.”

Baertschi has mostly languished in the minors since then. He has eight goals and 17 assists in 36 games for AHL Adirondack this season, with no goals and four assists in 15 appearances for the Flames.

Despite Baertschi’s struggles, the Canucks obviously still see something in the 22-year-old former 13th overall pick, as they reportedly surrendered a second-round pick in the trade to get him.
