Christian Ehrhoff participated in part of the Pittsburgh Penguins’ practice on Saturday for the first time since he sustained a head injury on Jan. 28, per the team’s website.

The 32-year-old defenseman didn’t take part in contact drills, but he will be back on the ice Sunday.

“The next step is to see how he reacted to that,” Penguins coach Mike Johnston said. “With these concussion-like symptoms they want to see how you interact with other guys on the ice and then you get to the contact next. We’ll see what the doctors have to say.”

Ehrhoff, who is playing out a one-year, $4 million contract, has three goals and 10 assists in 43 contests in 2014-15. While that might be a step behind many of his previous seasons from an offensive standpoint, the Penguins have been leaning heavily on him by giving him an average of 22:15 minutes per contest.

Meanwhile, defenseman Paul Martin missed Saturday’s practice with an undisclosed injury originally sustained on Wednesday, but he’s still expected to play Sunday.
