Breathe easy, Bolts: Garrison (lower body) is day-to-day

Tampa Bay Lightning v New York Islanders

Tampa Bay Lightning v New York Islanders

The Tampa Bay Lightning might’ve dodged a bullet regarding Jason Garrison -- on Friday, GM Steve Yzerman said the veteran defenseman’s status is day-to-day after suffering a lower-body injury on Thursday against Dallas.

The Bolts, are already without d-men Radko Gudas and Matt Carle, couldn’t afford to lose another body on the back end. Center Brian Boyle was called into emergency relief last night -- Tampa Bay only dressed six defensemen for the game, then had to use Boyle on the blueline after Garrison exited.

Even with the relatively optimistic news on Garrison, it remains to be seen if Yzerman will stand pat with his defense as the Mar. 2 trade deadline draws near. At one point this season, Tampa had enough defensive depth to send veteran Eric Brewer to Anaheim without a roster player coming back in return; now, the club is rolling with a top-six of Garrison, Anton Stralman, Victor Hedman, Mark Barberio, Andrej Sustr and Luke Witkowski, with Nikita Nesterov in reserve.
