Report: Panthers hire former Flyers exec Luukko

Peter Luukko

The Miami Herald is reporting that the Florida Panthers have hired former Philadelphia Flyers exec Peter Luukko to become their executive chairman.

Luukko resigned as president of Comcast-Spectator (the parent company of the Flyers) in December of 2013. Before that, he was often referred to as Ed Snider’s right-hand man.

According to the Herald, in Florida, Luukko is “expected to consult on hockey issues” as well as “restructure the team’s sales staff and help gain more sponsorship dollars as well as season ticket holders,” plus “help grow business at the BB&T Center as far as concerts and shows go” and be “part of the Panthers’ ongoing negotiations with Broward County regarding payment restructuring.”

For Panthers fans, the hiring of such a prominent NHL executive has to be seen as good news, a sign that ownership is committed to making things work in Sunrise.
