Per USA Today, the Red Wings are in talks with USA Hockey officials about the potential to host the 2018 World Junior Hockey Championships in Detroit.
The tournament, which has never been held in the Motor City before, would be played at the Red Wings’ new downtown arena that will replace their current home, Joe Louis Arena, in late 2017.
Next year’s tournament will be held in Finland and the 2017 edition will be in Toronto and Montreal. The ’18 event will land somewhere in the U.S., and there are an number of additional suitors aside from Detroit: Buffalo, Tampa Bay and Pittsburgh have all been reportedly expressed interest in hosting just the seventh American-based event in tournament history.
The previous six? Minneapolis (1982), Anchorage (1989), Boston (1996), Grand Forks (2005) and Buffalo (2011).
It’s believed USA Hockey will announce the name of the ’18 site by next fall.
