COLUMBUS -- Combine the handful of big-name stars that have dropped out of this weekend’s All-Star festivities in Columbus due to non-major injuries with the speculation that some players actually requested they not be selected, there’s a sense that participating in the three-day event has become an obligation, if not a hassle, more than an honor and privilege.

Well, enter Blues goalie Brian Elliott to prove that some players still think it’s pretty neat to be chosen. As reported by Greg Wyshynski of Yahoo Sports, Elliott left his beach vacation in the Turks and Caicos Islands to fly to chilly Ohio and fill in for injured goalie Sergei Bobrovsky.

Today at media day, Elliott’s teammate, Kevin Shattenkirk, was asked if he’d have done the same thing.

“I would’ve come,” said Shattenkirk. “You can’t really deny this. You don’t know how many times this is going to happen in your career. I think some guys have the luxury they know they might be here every year. [But] this is an experience you can’t really pass up on and something that 20 years from now you don’t want to say you skipped an All-Star Game because you wanted to stay on the beach for an extra day or two.”

While Shattenkirk joked that Elliott’s wife may not entirely agree with that notion, Elliott is certainly enjoying a fine season with St. Louis. The 29-year-old, in his big chance to prove he can be the Blues’ number one goalie, has gone 13-5-2 with a .930 save percentage.
