Oilers come back on the road to defeat Capitals

Ryan Nugent-Hopkins

Make that back-to-back wins on the road for the lowly Edmonton Oilers.

Down by two goals to the Washington Capitals late in the third period, the Oilers, last in the Pacific Division and Western Conference, managed a roaring comeback by their standards, scoring twice in the final 4:11 of regulation before taking this one in the shootout by a final score of 5-4.

They’re now up to four wins away from Edmonton, though for a team that has been as inept as the Oilers have been this season, to erase a two-goal deficit with time running out against a much-improved Capitals team is, at least for this night, a positive development.

The Capitals entered this game in a fight for a Wild Card spot in the Eastern Conference. The Oilers are in a battle for the Connor McDavid sweepstakes.

One highlight for the Capitals: Alex Ovechkin scored twice and is now up to 27 goals. One of his blasts also destroyed the net cam. Pretty cool, except his team was unable to put this one away and come away with two important points as the race to the playoffs continues.
