The injury suffered by Mikkel Boedker -- Arizona’s leading goalscorer this season -- was more serious than first indicated; on Tuesday, Coyotes GM Don Maloney confirmed that Boedker had his ruptured spleen removed following Sunday’s shootout loss to Winnipeg.

Received update on Boedker: he injured spleen during WPG game and had surgery that night to remove it, GM Don Maloney confirmed.

Surgery was successful. Boedker is recovering in Winnipeg and is expected to be fine.

It’s unclear when or how the injury occurred. Boedker was limited as the Winnipeg game went along -- he started with nine shifts for 6:29 TOI in the first period, but got just seven shifts in the second and two in the third (for a grand total of 1:32 TOI)... finishing with under 13 minutes, when he usually averages around 17-and-a-half.

Originally, the Coyotes said Boedker would be week-to-week with an “upper body injury,” failing to specify the spleen issue. The Danish winger did remain in Winnipeg following the game, however, and didn’t travel with the club to Chicago (thanks to the Coyotes’ medical staff, as noted by Fox Sports.)

According to the Arizona Republic, Boedker could return to Arizona in 2-3 days, and his recovery timetable is in the 4-6 week range.
