How badly would your team have to collapse to miss the playoffs?

This, of course, assumes your team is one of the 16 currently in a playoff position. (If it’s not, the good news is your team wouldn’t have to collapse at all to miss the playoffs!)

We’ll use the same “10 games over .500" rule we used here as the benchmark for making the playoffs.

Not even the word ‘colossal’ could describe this kind of collapse

Nashville Predators: 12-23-3

Anaheim Ducks: 11-22-3

New York Islanders: 13-20-4

Montreal Canadiens: 14-20-4

St. Louis Blues: 14-20-3

‘Colossal’ would be appropriate here, but come on, this isn’t happening

Detroit Red Wings: 13-19-4

Tampa Bay Lightning: 13-19-3

Pittsburgh Penguins: 15-20-3

New York Rangers: 16-20-3

Chicago Blackhawks: 15-19-3

Still not safe

Washington Capitals: 16-18-3

Winnipeg Jets: 15-17-3

Vancouver Canucks: 17-18-4

Boston Bruins: 16-15-5

San Jose Sharks: 16-15-5

Calgary Flames: 18-15-4

You may have noticed that the Los Angeles Kings, a.k.a. the defending Stanley Cup champions, are not currently in a playoff position. They’re close, though, level with Calgary in points and games played, with the Flames holding the tie-breaker with two more regulation/overtime victories.

The Florida Panthers are another team worth mentioning. They’ve fallen four points back of the Bruins for the second wild-card spot, but they still have three games in hand on Boston.
