Whether we’re talking about one of the best teams in the Western Conference or one of the worst in the East, the one constant lately is that almost anyone who plays the Maple Leafs can beat them by a comfortable margin. Monday’s contest against the Hurricanes is shaping up to be more of the same as Carolina chased Leafs starter Jonathan Bernier from the game early in the second period.

Brad Malone found the back of the net 7:06 minutes into the first period and Elias Lindholm made is 2-0 Carolina just 41 seconds later on a breakaway:

Eric Staal added to Bernier’s pain just 48 seconds into the second frame:

Of course, if the Leafs lose this one, at this rate it will be difficult to pin it on Bernier. Going into this contest, Toronto had scored just one goal in its last four games and the Leafs haven’t found the back of the net yet tonight. That’s a staggering offensive collapse from a team that was at least capable in that regard through December.
