Struggling Leafs shut out again

The misery continues for the Toronto Maple Leafs.

This has been a disastrous four-game road trip. One goal. One goal in four games.

Often times, an excursion through California can be a difficult one for other teams around the league. For the Leafs, they were shut out twice in three games down in California. Then they rolled into St. Louis and their troubles when it comes to scoring goals endured.

The Leafs, with three wins since Dec. 16, lost by a final score of 3-0 on Saturday. They managed only 12 shots through the final two periods.

Yes, St. Louis plays a tight checking game. But that speaks to how bad the situation in Toronto is shaping up to be when, in the midst of a losing streak and scoring funk, a team can only manufacture 12 shots on goal in 40 minutes of play. And they were very much in this game, only down one goal after two periods.

Phil Kessel received some advice from Don Cherry on how to snap his scoring slump: “Forget about back-checking.”

This recent string of games where they’ve been shut out in has reached historical proportions.
