Boston forward Brad Marchand has been suspended two games for a slew-foot on Rangers center Derick Brassard, the NHL has announced.

“Marchand both kicks out Brassard’s skates and drives him backward to the ice with force,” the Department of Player Safety explained. “What makes this play even more dangerous is its proximity to the boards.

“By rendering his opponent defenseless in this way, at this point on the ice, Marchand risks not only an injury to Brassard from his crash to the ice, but also from a collision with the boards.”

Marchand wasn’t penalized on the play which occurred midway through Boston’s 3-0 win on Thursday. Brassard wasn’t injured, and didn’t leave the game.

Here’s the full video explanation:

It’s worth noting the league alluded to Marchand’s history as a repeat offender, including a previous fine for slew footing (against Matt Niskanen in 2011.)

With this ruling, Marchand will now miss Boston’s next two games -- Saturday at home versus Columbus, Tuesday in Dallas -- and forfeit $48,387.10 in salary to the Players’ Emergency Assistance Fund.
