With their star, starting goalie Carey Price out with an upper-body injury and listed as day-to-day, the Montreal Canadiens have recalled Joey MacDonald from the American Hockey League.
The Canadiens goaltender suffered an upper-body injury in a collision with the Blue Jackets’ Matt Calvert Wednesday night in Columbus. Price’s injury is not considered serious, but Dustin Tokarski will likely start against the Islanders and the Canadiens have recalled Joey MacDonald from the Hamilton Bulldogs.
The 27-year-old Price has been a huge reason for the Canadiens’ success this season (you’ll recall a discussion on this website earlier in the week about goalies, including Price, as potential MVP candidates).
The Habs currently sit second in the Atlantic Division, three points back of the Tampa Bay Lightning with three games in hand prior to Montreal’s meeting with the New York Islanders on Saturday.
The numbers tell the story.
Price has the fifth best save percentage in the league (.927 per cent), the ninth best goals-against average (2.19), and has faced the fifth most shots amongst NHL goalies (1,041). He ranks fourth in saves (965).
