Scott Laughton tried to cut back into the middle of the ice. And Matt Niskanen was there.
Niskanen, the Washington Capitals defenseman, met Laughton with a thunderous open-ice hit just inside the blue line as the physical play between these teams really picked up in the second period.
There was no call on the play. Laughton was not on the bench to begin the third period.
