Red Wings goalie Jimmy Howard is out 2-4 weeks with a slight groin tear, Detroit GM Ken Holland told MLive today.

Suffice to say, it could’ve been worse. Howard was stretchered off the ice Saturday versus Washington. At the time, it looked like it could be a major injury. But fortunately that’s not the case.

In the meantime, the Wings will have to lean on 22-year-old Petr Mrazek, who’s been mostly solid this season but has made just 15 career NHL starts in goal.

Detroit is only four points clear of a playoff spot, so this upcoming stretch without Howard will be an important one.

Howard won’t play in the All-Star Game on Jan. 25.
