Red Wings goaltender Jimmy Howard has been placed on injured reserve after he injured his groin Saturday.
Howard left Detroit’s 3-1 loss to the Washington Capitals on a stretcher early in the first period. He had an MRI scheduled for Sunday.
Entering Saturday’s action, Howard was 16-7-7 with a 2.08 goals-against average.
In a corresponding move, the club has recalled goaltender Tom McCollum from the AHL’s Grand Rapids Griffins.
McCollum has appeared in one NHL game with the Red Wings, making five saves in a relief effort on March 30, 2011 against the St. Louis Blues.
In 21 AHL games this season the 25-year-old is 10-8-3 to go along with a 2.33 G.A.A. and a .911 save percentage.
Detroit is back in action Tuesday when they visit the Buffalo Sabres.
