Notes:

--- It helps to have the puck. Detroit, Chicago, Tampa Bay and the Islanders have it a lot and get a lot of power plays; Buffalo barely has it all, and doesn’t.

--- Speed is a factor in drawing penalties. No surprise to see a couple of older, slower teams, New Jersey and Vancouver, near the bottom of the table.

--- It’s important to remember that referees, though they will deny this, have a tendency to even up calls. The Red Wings, for example, get a lot of power plays, but they’ve also been shorthanded a fair bit. The largest PP/PK differentials belong to Chicago (plus-39) and Boston (minus-34).

Top 5 PP/PK differential

Chicago (+39)
Calgary (+35)
NY Islanders (+31)
San Jose (+23)
Tampa Bay (+23)

Bottom 5 PP/PK differential

Boston (-34)
Winnipeg (-28)
Montreal (-26)
New Jersey (-25)
Buffalo (-23)
