Hextall: Flyers aren’t planning big changes ... yet

There was a time when it seemed like the Philadelphia Flyers would make big changes as casually as someone might flip a switch, but things have been a little different once Ron Hextall became general manager.

Could that change if the Flyers continue to struggle? Hextall said that they’re not pulling the trigger on major alterations just yet, although things could be trending in that direction, as CSNPhilly.com reports.

“We’re not at the point where we’re looking at getting rid of guys, but I would say that probably we’re not far from the point where if we don’t get it going, we’re going to have to start thinking about some things,” Hextall said.

“In saying that, you look at those things all the time. Every day, who can help us now and who can help us in the future. If there is anything out there, then we will move forward with it. Obviously, we’re not happy with the performance of the team.”

Beyond the longer term threat of changes, the most interesting detail is that Hextall said that the Flyers struggles “absolutely” boil down to the players failing to execute, rather than coaching.

Does that mean head coach Craig Berube’s job is safe? We’ve seen countless examples in which “votes of confidence” really just forecast firings, so we’ll have to wait and see.

Change could come far more rapidly if the Flyers’ upcoming four-game homestand falls flat, though.
