NHL fines Flyers for holiday travel

nhllogo

The NHL announced that the Philadelphia Flyers have been fined an unspecified amount for traveling to Nashville on Dec. 26. The Flyers had a game scheduled for Dec. 27, but the team wasn’t allowed to make the trip a day early because the new CBA states that the NHL has to have a mandatory break from Dec. 24-26.

The portion of the CBA in question, Article 16.5(b), specifically forbids travel while stating that all teams must take that three-day period off.

According to an earlier Sportsnet report, the Flyers departed for Nashville at 8:24 p.m. ET.

Other teams caught the league’s attention on Dec. 26 by holding informal skates. The Anaheim Ducks in particular were under investigation by the NHL and deputy commissioner Bill Daly warned that they might be in line for a big fine. However, the league was ultimately satisfied that the Ducks didn’t violate the CBA as the practice was organized by captain Ryan Getzlaf and run without the participation of Anaheim’s front office or coaches.
