‘He’s not hungry': Patrick Roy rips backup goalie Berra

Patrick Roy didn’t hold back. He ripped goalie Reto Berra, and did so voluntarily, without being specifically asked about the 27-year-old from Switzerland.

Speaking on 104.3 The Fan in Denver, Roy, the Colorado Avalanche sophomore head coach, was asked about the performance of 22-year-old Calvin Pickard, who has a save percentage of .934 in 14 games, and the decision to send him back down to the American Hockey League.

After heaping praise on Pickard, Roy brought the hammer down on Berra, who hasn’t played a game for the Avalanche since Dec. 5, but struggled in his last three outings, allowing a combined seven goals on his last 25 shots faced.

That’s just a small sample size. Berra hasn’t played well for most of this season, but then again, same could be said for the entire Avalanche team, too.

“Am I happy with Berra? No, I’m not happy with Berra,” said Roy 17 minutes into the audio clip.

“I think he’s not working hard enough in the practice. He’s not hungry and right now our confidence is on Pickard.”

Roy then made a point of saying that Pickard would be called back up to the Avalanche during Colorado’s upcoming road trip. Roy said Pickard would also get some playing time during the upcoming trip.

“We’re very happy with Pickard. We like to see someone working hard and being rewarded by his work ethic and we’re certainly pleased with him,” said Roy.
