Staal has missed the first 35 games after suffering a fractured fibula during a preseason game against the Buffalo Sabres in September.
Canes’ coach Bill Peters said the team will monitor Staal’s minutes against the Canadiens.
Staal, 26, had 15 goals and 40 points in 82 games with Carolina last season.
Additionally, Jiri Tlusty, who has missed 16 games with an upper body injury, is expected to make his return to the Carolina lineup Monday.
Tlusty has 10 goals and 13 points in 28 games this season.
