The Minnesota Wild have placed goaltender Niklas Backstrom on injured reserve retroactive to Dec. 21 due to illness, forcing them to recall John Curry from the American Hockey League on an emergency basis.

The club made the announcement Saturday, shortly before hosting the Winnipeg Jets in a meeting of Central Division clubs vying for a Wild Card spot in the West.

In 14 games this season, the 36-year-old Backstrom has a 5-3-3 record, .901 save percentage and 2.58 goals-against average.
