It remains to be seen who will replace Devils head coach Peter DeBoer after he was let go yesterday, but TSN’s Bob McKenzie, who was first to report the firing, suggested that there is “considerable talk of Adam Oates and Scott Stevens.”

Oates is a retired Hall of Famer who scored 341 goals and 1,420 points during his 1,337-game playing career. He took over the Washington Capitals’ bench for the 2013 campaign, but only lasted two seasons before the Capitals cut ties with him and GM George McPhee. Oates had a 65-48-17 record.

Stevens is also a member of the Hall of Fame thanks to his work as a player. The former defenseman won the Stanley Cup three times with the Devils. More recently he served as an assistant coach with New Jersey for two years before deciding to leave his post in September for “personal” reasons.

An earlier report also put former Senators bench boss Paul MacLean in the mix of candidates to become DeBoer’s successor.
