The NHL’s first coaching casualty of the season is Paul MacLean.
The Ottawa Senators announced today via Twitter that MacLean, the Jack Adams Award winner in 2013, has been dismissed.
Dave Cameron, an assistant under MacLean, will become the new head coach.
The timing of the move is somewhat curious, as it was only last night that the Sens fought back from a 3-0 deficit to beat the Vancouver Canucks.
At the same time, last night’s victory was preceded by a five-game winless streak, during which there was much speculation about MacLean’s coaching future. The Sens are currently 11-11-5 and four points back of a playoff spot in the Eastern Conference.
MacLean was reportedly on the hot seat at the end of last season, which saw the Sens miss the playoffs for the first time since 2011.
