It’s not a huge shock considering the fact that the St. Louis Blues invested in all-time wins leader Martin Brodeur, but Brian Elliott could be sidelined for some time.
Blues head coach Ken Hitchcock said that Elliott will remain out “a while” after testing his injured knee skating in Chicago, the St. Louis Post-Dispatch’s Jeremy Rutherford reports. Much like with the New York Islanders with Travis Hamonic and Johnny Boychuk, “a while” can be left up to your interpretation.
If that translates to months, it could set up a pretty intriguing “past versus future” goalie battle between Brodeur, 42, and Jake Allen, 24.
Brodeur lost in his Blues debut, giving up four goals on 24 shots. Allen has been solid so far for St. Louis, going 8-3-1 with a .914 save percentage. Still, Allen only has 27 games of NHL experience (plus one playoff minute from 2011-12), so there’s no doubt who would win if the two goalies were judged based on their resumes alone.
Elliott, 29, has his fair share of critics, yet he’s been outstanding so far this season.
