One of the more colorful and entertaining tough guys in recent memory hung up the skates on Friday -- George Parros announced his retirement after nine seasons in the NHL.

“It’s been an honor to play in the greatest league in the world. Thanks to the organizations I’ve had the good fortune to play for, especially to the Samueli and Molson families,” Parros said in a statement. “I’ve had the most amazing support from all of the fans who have supported my many endeavors throughout my career, for that I am eternally grateful.

“A final thank you to my parents Jim and Lynne, my wife Tiffany and my children who have made this dream of mine a reality.”

A four-year player at Princeton that graduated with a degree in economics, Parros began his career with the Kings before getting traded to Freeway Faceoff rival Anaheim during the 2006-07 campaign. It was with the Ducks where Parros enjoyed his greatest NHL successes, winning a Stanley Cup in 2007 while posting a career-high five goals and 10 points during the 2008-09 campaign.

Following his time in Anaheim, Parros played for both Florida and Montreal. Per HockeyFights, he retires with a staggering 158 regular-season fights on his resume; Parros also set a personal single-season high with 27 scraps during the 2010-11 campaign.
