Gordie Howe was hospitalized on Tuesday because of what his son, Mark Howe, feared was a “serious stroke.” Fortunately Gordie Howe, who has been recovering from a major stroke sustained in October, hasn’t suffered a new stroke.

“[It was] likely dehydration with superimposed fatigue,” son Murray Howe told CBC News. “Plan to discharge him home tomorrow. He’s alert and ate well tonight. I spoke with him briefly on the phone. He’s still him. Just worn out.”

Howe, who has been living with his children since his wife passed away in 2009, suffers from dementia and has been dealing with back problems. On Sunday, Mark said that his father is “unable to walk and his speech is very minimal,” but that an epidural is helping to alleviate the back pain. However, he was non-responsive when therapists arrived Monday morning and stayed that way until the evening when he became alert and recognized his family members.

“He’s a fighter,” his daughter, Cathy Purnell, said. “The man is tough. He has this will to keep going, all things considered.”
