The Buffalo Sabres’ morning skate was already considered optional on Tuesday, but heavy snowfall made the team take such a label more seriously today.
(If you follow sports, you know that “optional” isn’t always that far off from “mandatory, and an absence might land you a fine.”)
Head coach Ted Nolan told WGR-AM 550 (via the Buffalo News) that it looks like tonight’s game against the San Jose Sharks is still on, for now. That said, travel hasn’t been easy in the area.
“Talking to a few people, especially the training staff who live outside the area in those snowbelt areas, it’s pretty ugly,” Nolan said. “It doesn’t look good to even make it to the rink this morning for our morning skate.”
Honestly, a weather update caused a double-take: three-to-five inches of snow per hour in November? It appears to be true, though:
Portions of Buffalo, NY metro area getting hammered with 3-5 inches of snow per HOUR. 3-4 foot+ totals likely in some places.

Just look at what the Buffalo News’ John Vogl is dealing with:
Well, I did my part to get to the Sabres' morning skate. The town snowplows? We shall see. pic.twitter.com/5lbVw54GAR

Again, Nolan said “so far, so good” as far as the game happening. If a cancellation happens, it would likely come this afternoon.
