Report: Spezza, Stars working on multi-year extension

Minnesota Wild v Dallas Stars

The Dallas Stars are narrowing in on a multi-year extension with Jason Spezza, according to TSN’s Bob McKenzie.

Dallas acquired Spezza from the Ottawa Senators on July 1 in exchange for Alex Chiasson, Alexander Guptill, Ludwig Karlsson, Nicholas Paul, and a 2015 second round selection in a move that sparked optimism about Dallas’ chances of being competitive this season. Spezza has largely performed as advertised with three goals and 16 points in 18 contests, but so far the Stars haven’t lived up to expectations as a team.

Dallas currently sits in the Central Division basement with a 6-8-4 record and coach Lindy Ruff has singled out tonight’s game against Carolina as one where the team has “to make a stand.”

Spezza, 31, is completing a seven-year, $49 million contract. He should have plenty of leverage given that he’ll be one of the most desirable unrestricted free agents on the market this summer if he chooses to go that route. That being said, the salary cap might not increase next season and there’s a chance that will be a factor in these negotiations.
