Report: Methot drawing interest from Ducks, Wings

MarcMethot

Ottawa Senators defenseman Marc Methot -- currently sidelined with back and hip injuries -- is reportedly drawing interest from a number of NHL clubs, per TSN’s Darren Dreger.

More:

[Methot] saw a specialist last week who confirmed his injury is soft-tissue based. That’s Good news. Early next week, the Senators are hoping to have a better sense as to when the veteran blueliner will be healthy enough to return.

Meanwhile, there’s been no progress made on his contract negotiations with the Senators - and virtually no discussions over the past three weeks - which continues to fuel trade speculation. The Anaheim Ducks, Detroit Red Wings, Florida Panthers and Edmonton Oilers are believed to be among the teams interested.

Methot isn’t the right-handing shooting defenseman Mike Babcock has long desired, but would be a nice veteran addition to a Detroit blueline that lacks depth.

Anaheim, meanwhile, has acknowledged its back end is a weak spot and has brought in defensemen at recent trade deadlines: Stephane Robidas last year, and Ben Lovejoy in ’12.

As for Methot, he’s in the last of a four-year, $12 million deal that carries an average annual cap hit of $3M. Various outlets have reported Methot’s seeking a significant raise on his new deal -- $5 million per -- so it’ll be interesting to see if available cap space for next season plays into any potential deal, or if the 29-year-old blueliner would be viewed solely as a rental.
