Proving time: Kaberle signs PTO with Rangers’ AHL affiliate

Tomas Kaberle

As anticipated, Tomas Kaberle signed a PTO with the AHL’s Hartford Wolf Pack, opening up a chance for the veteran blueliner to prove that he deserves to land on the New York Rangers’ roster.

Hartford plays three games this weekend, so the 36-year-old could get multiple opportunities to prove himself. It’s not expected that he’ll play in all three of those contests, however, according to TSN’s Darren Dreger.

This seems to be purely an audition for the NHL, too, as Dreger notes that he won’t stick with the Wolf Pack if this doesn’t work out.

It would appear that Kaberle has his work cut out for him. While Ryan McDonagh’s still rehabbing a shoulder injury, Dan Boyle returned to the Rangers’ fold last night, further limiting their need for an offensive-minded and puck-moving defenseman.

That said, Kaberle’s a four-time All-Star with almost 1,000 games of regular season experience, so the Rangers are justified in at least giving him an extended look.
