Report: NHL picks Vegas ownership group

Las Vegas

The New York Post is reporting that the NHL has “chosen the team of William Foley and the Maloof family as the owners of a Las Vegas expansion team.”

If the report is accurate -- and we’re certainly not offering our guarantee that it is -- it would coincide with what the Post reported in October, that Foley was “in advanced talks with the NHL about bringing the first major league sports franchise to Las Vegas.”

It would also coincide with what was reported in April of 2013, that the Maloofs, the former owners of the NBA’s Sacramento Kings, met with NHL commissioner Gary Bettman about buying a hockey team, “with Las Vegas among the possible destinations.”

On top of that, deputy commissioner Bill Daly told the Star Tribune on Monday that he was in Las Vegas over the weekend to meet with a potential ownership group and tour the site of the city’s future arena, which is currently under construction.

However, Daly didn’t make it sound like expanding to Vegas was a done deal.

“What’s difficult on making a call on Vegas is it’s such a unique market,” he said. “It’s really hard to know. The owners are going to have to be satisfied that the prospects of putting a franchise there are good and the fundamentals are solid.”
