Roy ‘still very positive’ about Avs

Toronto Maple Leafs v Colorado Avalanche

When the Colorado Avalanche won just twice in their first 10 games, coach Patrick Roy was confident that things would turn around in short order.

Hasn’t happened. With a 2-3-1 record since that time, the Avs have fallen five points back of a playoff spot and have the third-worst points percentage in the NHL. Based on their possession stats, they deserve what they’re getting.

Still, the league’s reigning coach of the year is sticking to his guns and staying upbeat.

“There’s some things offensively that I think we could do a little bit better, like going to the net and simplifying things around the net, and I think the players are aware of that,” Roy said, per the Denver Post. “And when we start scoring in times of the game, like early or at the end of periods, I think it’s going to help our team and get their confidence going. For me, it’s still very positive here.”

The Avs lost the first of their current four-game trip Saturday in Philadelphia. They play next tomorrow on Long Island, before games Thursday in Manhattan and Saturday in Newark.

If there’s one legitimate excuse for Colorado’s underwhelming record, it’s a tough schedule to start the season. According to one measure, only Dallas has played a tougher slate of games.
