The Chicago Blackhawks got goals from unusual sources in Sunday’s 5-2 victory over the San Jose Sharks.

Chicago outshot San Jose 20-9 in the first period and took an early lead with three goals over the span of 2:34 minutes. All of those markers were scored by defensemen and that run featured Trevor Van Riemsdyk’s first career goal as well as Niklas Hjalmarsson’s first goal since Jan. 5.

Joe Pavelski tried his best to keep the Sharks in this game with two goals. His efforts proved to be in vain, but he’s now on a three-game point streak and has an impressive seven goals and 15 points in 16 contests this season.

San Jose pulled within one goal thanks to Pavelski and Chicago’s lead remained narrow for roughly 30 minutes until Bryan Bickell finally provided the Hawks with some insurance late in the third period. Jonathan Toews collected the empty-netter with 1:57 remaining in regulation time.

Chicago has now won two of its last three contests to improve to 8-6-1 this season. The Sharks are 8-6-2 after dropping three of their last five games.
