Before the season began, the Arizona Coyotes raised some eyebrows with their decision to cut a number of talented young players from their training camp roster, including Brandon Gormley. The Coyotes reversed that decision today when they announced that the 22-year-old defenseman had been summoned and 26-year-old forward Justin Hodgman would return to AHL Portland.

When the Coyotes cut Gormley along with Max Domi and Lucas Lessio, Coyotes GM Don Maloney argued that it was in the interest of winning now.

“We just think for our franchise right now, we have to be competitive,” Maloney said. “We need to be a playoff team. That’s what’s going to get people excited and in the building.

“Nobody has an appetite to just throw in the towel.”

The Coyotes have gotten off to a 4-6-1 start though and have won just two of their last eight contests.

Gormley has three points in six AHL games in 2014-15. He appeared in five games with the Coyotes last season and posted a plus-four rating while averaging 14:32 minutes of ice time per contest.
