The Chicago Blackhawks certainly aren’t wanting for shots. They actually lead the NHL in that department.
Goals, on the other hand, have been tough to come by. They’re tied for 25th in that category.
It’s rare to see such a discrepancy.
“We get good chances, a lot of pucks around the net tonight, they’re just not going in,” captain Jonathan Toews said after Sunday’s 1-0 loss to Winnipeg.
“It’s tough to explain why that is.”
Sometimes, that’s just the way hockey goes. Chicago has scored on just 5.9 percent of its shots. Only Florida (5.6%) and Buffalo (5.2%) -- two teams that lack the finishers the ‘Hawks boast -- have lower conversion rates.
The past few seasons, the Blackhawks’ shooting percentage has finished over 9 percent. Which is to say, there’s no real need to panic.
“We’ve been through moments like this before, it’s early in the season,” Toews said. “It’s something you have to tell yourself that you can get it out of your system now, and when we do get out of it, we’ll be a better team because of it.”
Chicago plays in Montreal tomorrow evening.
