Wild place Spurgeon on IR, could get Brodin back Saturday

Jared Spurgeon’s shoulder injury will keep him out of Saturday’s game against the Dallas Stars, yet the Minneapolis Star-Tribune’s Michael Russo reports that the Minnesota Wild might get Jonas Brodin and Christian Folin back tonight.

Update: Spurgeon has been placed on IR, Folin is off injured reserve and Jonathon Blum was recalled from the AHL in exchange for Justin Falk, according to Russo. It looks like Brodin’s almost certain to be in:

Spurgeon, 24, hurt his shoulder thanks to a hit by San Jose Sharks forward Joe Pavelski from Thursday’s Wild win. (Video of the check isn’t available.)

“Not happy,” Spurgeon said. “We’ve been playing awesome, so that’s the hardest thing to come out of the lineup when your team is playing well. We’ve been winning games. It’s one of the best starts since I’ve been here that we’ve had. But [with] the guys we have in the room, it’s not going to matter with me being out with the way we’re playing.”

As he said, it’s not the worst-case scenario, though. For one thing, Spurgeon (pictured) told the Star-Tribune that he isn’t suffering from a separated shoulder. Perhaps this won’t be a situation that keeps him on the shelf very long?

Either way, Brodin may be able to fill the void, as the 21-year-old has been carrying a similar workload to Spurgeon so far this season:

Brodin: 23:29 time on ice per game, with 1:52 on the power play and 2:39 on the PK

Spurgeon: 22:20 TOI per game, 2:44 on PP and 2:24 on PK

That’s not to say that this is an easy loss, but it’s better than having both out of the lineup.

Folin, 23, would most likely play a bottom pairing role if he gets back into the mix on Saturday.

Erik Haula may also get back into the mix, which helps since Matt Cooke is banged up. Wild head coach Mike Yeo praised the team’s depth in light of these players going on and off the injured list.
