Goaltenders Henrik Lundqvist and Ondrej Pavelec were superb tonight, but someone had to win eventually, so after both netminders stayed perfect through 65 minutes, the contest went to a shootout. Winnipeg’s Evander Kane ended up settling the game in the fourth round to give the Jets a 1-0 shootout win over the New York Rangers.
Although they ended up losing the extra point, the fact that the Rangers stayed in this game at all is impression. New York lost blueliners Ryan McDonagh (separated shoulder) and Kevin Klein (foot contusion) early in the contest and Dan Girardi was asked to log 34:50 minutes as a result. That’s a career-high for him, per the Rangers on Twitter.
Of course, Lundqvist deserves a lot of credit too for posting his second shutout in five games. Pavelec was busier though as he had to turn aside 38 shots to earn his 12th career shutout.
Winnipeg now has earned at least a point in each of its last four games to improve to 5-5-1 this season. The Jets will try to keep the ball rolling against Chicago tomorrow.
