Stephen Weiss is on his way back to Detroit. Per the Macomb Daily’s Chuck Pleiness, the Red Wings’ forward is unable to play tomorrow for AHL Grand Rapids due to a groin injury.

Weiss did play yesterday for the Griffins, but only for the first two periods. The 31-year-old had been sent to the AHL on a conditioning assignment.

Weiss -- with a $4.9 million cap hit through 2017-18 -- has only played once this season for the Red Wings, logging just 8:03 of ice time versus the Leafs on Oct. 18.

The Wings signed Weiss in the summer of 2013 with the expectation that he could center their second line. Unfortunately for both club and player, that expectation has not come close to fruition.
