Video: Scott leaves bench, fights Ducks’ Jackman (Updated)

Scott Jackman fight

John Scott didn’t get a single penalty minute in his first four games with the San Jose Sharks. Not only did that trend end in a hurry Sunday night, but his actions might have triggered an automatic 10-game suspension.

Scott left the Sharks bench and promptly fought Tim Jackman late in the third period of San Jose’s eventual 4-1 victory. The incident came close to leading to a line brawl:

The reason why Scott might receive a 10-game suspension is because his actions might have been in violation of rule 70.10, which states:

The first player to leave the players’ or penalty bench during an altercation or for the purpose of starting an altercation from either or both teams shall be suspended automatically without pay for the next ten (10) regular League and/or Play-off games of his team.

The reason why nothing is guaranteed though is because the NHL still has the ability to review the matter. CBC’s Elliotte Friedman thought it might have been a legitimate line change. If the league agrees, Scott might not have to sit out the Sharks’ next 10 games.

Update: Here’s a helpful angle of what happened from Scott’s perspective.

It’s worth adding that Scott and Jackman also exchanged blows at the start of the contest:
