The Calgary Flames have signed defenseman T.J. Brodie to a five-year contract. The deal is reportedly worth $4.65 million per season, for a total of $23.25 million.

Brodie, 24, is considered one of the more underrated blue-liners in the league. He had 31 points in 81 games last season, while logging an average of 24:04 per game. His partner, Mark Giordano, is likewise an excellent defender.

Brodie is off to a great start in 2014-15. He already has three goals and four assists in seven games, while averaging a team-high 24:10 per contest.

Calgary general manager Brad Treliving says Brodie is “going to be a big building block” for the rebuilding club and believes the Flames got a good deal given the market for players of Brodie’s caliber.

Brodie was the 114th pick in the 2008 draft. He played over 100 games in the AHL before really establishing himself as an NHLer.
