The Chicago Blackhawks scored the tying goal on a possible high stick late in the third period against the Calgary Flames on Wednesday.
However, even after numerous replays, officials had to go with the call on the ice - which was for a good goal - after deeming the video replays were inconclusive. The goal came off an Andrew Shaw deflection in front of Calgary goalie Jonas Hiller, who was spectacular.
It was close, Shaw’s stick right around crossbar level when it made contact with the puck.
The goal came with 5:45 remaining in the third period and the Flames trying to hold on to a one-goal lead. The Blackhawks did come away with a single point, but that was it, as Calgary won the game by a final score of 2-1 in overtime.
Hiller made 49 saves.

At 14:15 of the third period in the Calgary Flames/Chicago Blackhawks game, the referee closest to the Calgary net signalled a goal after the puck crossed the Flames goal line. The on-ice officials huddled and agreed that Andrew Shaw’s stick was at or below the level of the crossbar when he deflected the puck into the net. According to Rule 38.4 (vi) “The determining factor is where the puck makes contact with the stick in relation to the crossbar. If the puck makes contact with the portion of the stick that is at or below the level of the crossbar and enters the goal, this goal shall be allowed”. Video review was inconclusive therefore the referee’s call on the ice stands - good goal Chicago.
