Oilers put Fasth on IR after Kings blowout, recall Bachman

New York Islanders v Edmonton Oilers

EDMONTON, AB - MARCH 06: Viktor Fasth #35 of the Edmonton Oilers warms-up prior to an NHL game against the New York Islanders at Rexall Place on March 06, 2014 in Edmonton, Alberta, Canada.

Edmonton’s nightmare start to the season continued on Wednesday, as the club placed goalie Viktor Fasth on injured reserve and recalled Richard Bachman from AHL Oklahoma City.

Fasth, who left Tuesday’s 6-1 drubbing in Los Angeles with a groin strain, had been Edmonton’s starter in two of three games this year and was responsible for the club’s lone point, captured in a 5-4 shootout loss to Vancouver on Saturday. With the 32-year-old Swede now sidelined indefinitely, No. 1 duties will fall to Ben Scrivens, who hasn’t played since allowing five goals in a season-opening loss to Calgary.

While things to appear bleak in Edmonton, there are some positives on the horizon. After tonight’s game in Arizona, the Oilers begin a seven-game homestand at Rexall, which includes five games against non-playoff teams (Vancouver x2, Nashville, Carolina, Washington).
