With power play ailing, Rangers will debut Malone

Ryan Malone will play his first regular season game for the Rangers on Tuesday night, drawing into the lineup for a home date against the Islanders.

The move appears to be in response to the club’s woeful power play.

The Rangers are 0-for-8 with the man advantage to start the season, one of just seven NHL teams yet to score a power play marker. All told, New York has had over 13 minutes of PP time thus far... with just 10 shots on goal.

Malone, 34, does have a history of success as a power play trigger man -- with an emphasis on history. He cracked double digits twice with the Penguins (10 PPG in 2005-06, 11 in 2007-08) but is a long way removed from those days; last year, he failed to score once with the man advantage in 57 games with the Lightning.

As for playing at even strength, Malone will open tonight on checking line with Dominic Moore and Tanner Glass, per NHL.com.
