Scorch, the original mascot of the Adirondack Flames, will not take the ice, after a controversial preseason unveiling skit in which the puck-head mascot overpowered an actor portraying a Glens Falls firefighter.
“We’re extinguishing Scorch,” Brian Petrovek, president of the Adirondack Flames, said in an interview on Tuesday. “The misjudgment we made was such that we came to that decision.”

By the way, the Flames dropped their first two games of the season, and they did it by a combined score of 11-2.
We hesitate to say that Scorch paid the price for those two losses, but clearly that’s what’s happened here. Just a classic case of “make the mascot the scapegoat for creating an unnecessary distraction by pretending to overpower a firefighter in a skit” at play here.
Sad, really.
