The Dallas Stars entered the season with high hopes after adding Jason Spezza and Ales Hemsky over the summer, but they got off to a bit of a shaky start. In the end it was Tyler Seguin and Jamie Benn rather than the newcomers that earned Dallas its first win. The duo had a special night in a 4-2 victory over Columbus.

Benn earned a Gordie Howe hat trick with a goal, two assists, and a fight against Nick Foligno.

Tyler Seguin arguably had the bigger night though. He scored the opening goal on a redirection and did so again to provide Dallas with the game-winner at 12:16 of the third period:

Seguin took advantage of an empty net with roughly a second left in regulation time to complete the hat trick.

Benn and Seguin’s efforts prevented Columbus from capitalizing on Ryan Johansen’s good night. The 22-year-old forward scored his first and second goals since signing a three-year, $12 million contract as a restricted free agent.

The Blue Jackets are now 2-1-0 this season, which isn’t bad given the injuries they’ve had to deal with.
