Matthew Lombardi did the expected on Monday, re-joining Geneve-Servette of Switzerland’s National League A following last week’s release from the New York Rangers.

Lombardi, 32, left the Swiss league during the offseason to sign with the Rangers in the hopes of reviving his NHL career, looking to provide center depth for a New York club short on bodies down the middle. In September, Lombardi’s chances of sticking with the team -- and playing in North America for the first time in over a year -- seemed to be heightened when Derek Stepan was lost to injury; Lombardi, however, then suffered a lower-body ailment of his own which sidelined him for a good chunk of training camp and the preseason.

After learning he’d been demoted to the Rangers’ AHL affiliate in Hartford, Lombardi declined the assignment and was later given his unconditional release.
