The Carolina Hurricanes announced that forward Zach Boychuk has been called up.

Boychuk was taken with the 14th overall pick in the 2008 NHL Entry Draft. He’s excelled in the minors, scoring 36 goals and 74 points in 69 AHL contests last season, but he has had difficulty securing a roster spot with Carolina.

The 25-year-old has played in 96 career games with the Hurricanes and has recorded nine goals and 15 assists over that span.

Carolina also put Jeff Skinner on the injured reserve list. Skinner is dealing with a concussion and it’s not known when he might be able to play again. However his move is retroactive to Oct. 5, so the decision to place him on the reserve list could be interpreted as merely a way to free up a roster spot rather than a strong indication of how he’s doing.
